Background

  • 'receptor signaling protein activity ; GO:0005057' was originally undefined.
  • GO:0005057 was used incorrectly to annotate both receptors and downstream signaling molecules.
  • It was decided that GO:0005057 is intended for annotation of downstream signaling molecules, so based on a proposal in SF:3101487, in Nov 2010, it was defined as:
    • Conveys a signal from an upstream receptor or intracellular signal transducer, converting the signal into a form where it can ultimately trigger a change in the state or activity of a cell.
    • Comment: This term is intended for annotation of signal transducers that act directly or indirectly downstream of a receptor. For receptors themselves, consider annotating to the term 'receptor activity ; GO:0004872'. Also consider annotating to the term 'intracellular signal transduction ; GO:0035556'.

Outstanding Issues

  • There is a proposal to rename the children of GO:0005057

FROM:

  • receptor signaling protein tyrosine kinase activity ; GO:0004716
  • receptor signaling protein tyrosine phosphatase activity ; GO:0004728
  • receptor signaling protein serine/threonine kinase activity ; GO:0004702
  • receptor signaling protein serine/threonine phosphatase activity ;GO:0009400

TO:

  • signal transducing protein tyrosine kinase activity
  • signal transducing protein tyrosine phosphatase activity
  • signal transducing protein serine/threonine kinase activity
  • signal transducing protein serine/threonine phosphatase activity
  • HOWEVER, since enzyme receptors are 'signal transducing enzymes', this proposal would mean that the receptors would have to be moved under these terms, and therefore the distinction between receptors and downstream signaling molecules would be lost.
  • Therefore we need an alternative proposal so the distinction remains.

Done

Obsoleted the following GO terms:

receptor signaling protein serine/threonine kinase signaling protein activity ; GO:0005076
receptor signaling protein tyrosine kinase signaling protein activity ; GO:0008268
receptor signaling protein serine/threonine phosphatase signaling protein activity ; GO:0005081
receptor signaling protein tyrosine phosphatase signaling protein activity ; GO:0005082
transmembrane receptor protein serine/threonine kinase signaling protein activity ; GO:0005071
transmembrane receptor protein tyrosine kinase signaling protein activity ; GO:0005066.
