This page is for gathering ideas for short video (or slide-based) tutorials about how to use GO, the website, GO tools, anything else that might be useful to users.

Video content

Good to have different levels of tutorials;

  • basic introduction videos (e.g. what is GO, what is a GO annotation) - link to advanced/use cases videos for "further watching"
  • advanced user videos (e.g. how to filter, how to search GO terms)
  • use cases (e.g. how to do a GO term enrichment on a list of differentially expressed genes, GO slims)

Not all people like watching videos, therefore the content of the video should also be represented as a written document/step-by-step FAQ

General

Ontology

How to create video tutorials for GO

  • We can prepare two types of videos:
    • Point and explain features of the website - max length 2m.
    • Case studies, e.g. user help questions, how to do a GO slim/term enrichment - optimal length 3-5mins. ... because >5 minutes --> longer than anyone's attention span.
  • Use a quiet room, turn off fans, additional computers, etc. Use a microphone and set up a pop shield.
  • Prepare a script: could be 100 to 300 words in length, depending on content and length of video. One person can do the screen movements and one person reads the script, simultaneously - this seems to flow better than recording the voice-over after screen capture.
  • More tips on the mechanics can be found in many sites, these are two examples: the "I'd rather be reading" blog and HongKiat.com.
  • Post your videos on YouTube and provide links from GO website
  • Contextual help for individual pages is useful for describing the resource or what you can do on the page - set-up so that it appears the first time a user visits and then not on subsequent visits. Should have a highly visible "close" icon, links to relevant part of help pages and video tutorials

Technologies

Screen recording and video editing

  • iMovie (standard Mac software) - OK, but not very intuitive; can use voice-over
  • Camtasia - need a licence (30-day free trial; £50/year fee); intuitive to use; can zoom, edit, voice-over, add arrows/notes. Approx. time to make one video is 4 hours, including editing

User feedback systems

  • Google notes (for user feedback) - analagous to Survey Monkey; collates all responses into a spreadsheet; allows users to re-submit/edit responses
  • UserVoice (for user feedback) - puts responses into tracker system
