Confusing terms

    • protein dimerization, oligomerization etc.

Process terms:

GO:0006461 protein complex assembly

GO:0035786 protein complex oligomerization

GO:0051259 protein oligomerization

GO:0051260 protein homooligomerization

GO:0051291 protein heterooligomerization

GO:0051262 protein tetramerization

GO:0051289 protein homotetramerization

GO:0051290 protein heterotetramerization

GO:0070206 protein trimerization

GO:0070207 protein homotrimerization

GO:0070208 protein heterotrimerization

GO:0034214 protein hexamerization

...and regulation terms

Function terms:

GO:0046983 protein dimerization activity

GO:0042803 protein homodimerization activity

GO:0046982 protein heterodimerization activity

1. A protein binding to itself is not its function. Oligomeric state of a protein is indicative of its physical properties, not something we want to capture in GO. Should we represent these in the ontology?

2. If so, we need guidelines for their use
